Discovery Education’s Top Coder 2023: Winners Announced

Discovery Education today announced the winners of the 2023 Top Coder Challenge, a popular computer programming competition for schools across the UK.

The challenge invited children to unleash their creativity by designing animations, apps and games using Discovery Education Coding – the award-winning resource for primary schools.

The judges were highly impressed by the wide range of entries and the programming skills shown by entrants aged 5 to 11. From exploring outer space to deep-sea diving games, the judges remarked that this year’s entries showed “great imagination and impressive coding skills!”

The 2023 KS1 winner is 5 year old Daaris from Alpha Preparatory School in Harrow, who created a block coding game set in outer space.

The 2023 KS2 winner is 10 year old Amelie from Starcross Primary School in Devon (pictured above), who designed an exciting underwater fishing game.

Both Daaris and Amelie are now the proud owners of a Botley Coding Robot and have won a year’s free subscription to Discovery Education Coding for their school!

Amelie said, “I was very excited when I heard I had won the competition! It was a lot of fun coding my game in school.”

Daaris said, “I am so excited to have won, I love space and I love computing.  I am looking forward to programming Botley. I can make him do lots of things”

Alex Cross, Amelie’s teacher, said, “We are so proud of Amelie as she worked very hard on her game and really followed the brief she was given. The whole school will benefit from using the Discovery coding software for the next year.”

Debbie Tipton, Daaris’s teacher said, “Daaris was thrilled to win the prize.  His favourite subject is space and he incorporated his knowledge into the design.  He was also excited for the rest of the school to benefit from his award by having access to Discovery Education Coding for a year.  We are all very proud of Daaris.”

With lots of concepts to explore, Discovery Education Coding helps children to master computer programming in a fun and accessible way, giving them the freedom to create apps and games using their imagination.

Howard Lewis, Discovery Education’s Managing Director UK and International said:

“Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Discovery Education Top Coder Competition and to everyone who took part. Coding is a vital skill for the future. It’s great to see so many students using our resources to master it and have fun with computer programming.”
