Lampard Community School recruits Chroma to provide a specialist therapeutic service for their students

Barnstaple-based Lampard Community School is collaborating with Chroma, the UKs leading arts therapies organisation within the health, education and social care sectors, to deliver a specialist music therapy service to support their students’ social, emotional and mental health needs.

This partnership is a direct result of the success of the arts therapies service provided by Chroma at Pathfield School, Devon, a fellow school within the SENtient Trust.

The SENtient Trust is a Co-operative Educational Trust that includes eight special schools within Devon. Partners of the Trust include the co-operative Schools & College Trust and Devon County Council.

Chroma has provided evidence-based arts therapies to pupils at Pathfield School and its success has inspired Lampard Community School to introduce music therapy into their educational setting. Chroma’s work is evidenced via the East Kent Outcomes System (EKOS) which provides very clear data on progress towards therapy goals.

Lampard expects the therapeutic support will help its students with managing and expressing their emotions, reducing anxiety and stress, processing loss, grief and trauma, and increasing self-esteem and confidence to name a few.

Chroma will tailor its service model to meet the needs of students at the school, using a range of therapeutic techniques in sessions including instrumental improvisation, song writing and use of technology.

Young people at the school may also opt to share their thoughts and feelings through the music that they listen to, with lyrics contained in songs often reflective of their own experiences, which they may be finding difficult to articulate. This can provide a valuable foundation to working with difficult feelings in a therapy context.

One area of need being addressed through therapeutic provision is supporting students who are preparing for transitions to life beyond Lampard. Many students are experiencing high levels of anxiety at this time in their education and they will likely be navigating several changes over the coming months.

Music therapy and from September this year art therapy, will be a resource available directly within the school setting that can support students who may require therapeutic input at a time when their anxieties may be exacerbated.

Currently, Chroma delivers music therapy for one day a week, with four to five sessions delivered a day, which can include group or individual work, and this is likely to be expanded to offer more therapy sessions, including with the introduction of art therapy later this year.

Lucy Collings Pettit, a senior therapist at Chroma, who delivers the therapy sessions said: I am delighted to be able to provide music therapy to children and young people at Lampard.

Having accessible in-school therapeutic provision, providing psychological and emotional support for students, is incredibly valuable. In the current climate of spending constraints in schools, it is fantastic that the school recognise the value of the arts therapies and is investing to support their students in working towards achieving positive outcomes.

Jennie Harvey, head teacher at Lampard Community School, added: With many young people experiencing rising levels of anxiety and the need for mental health support, it is important, now more than ever, to provide an intervention like music therapy to our students in order to better support them.

We have seen the benefits of Chromas services at Pathfield School, where 97% of students accessing Chroma’s direct input have benefitted from the therapy offer, and I am excited to be able to ensure our pupils have opportunities for this high quality therapy provision.

Reduced anxiety and a greater ability to manage emotions impact on how much young people learn, so not only will this support our students’ wellbeing but it will also positively impact their access to education.”
