The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has announced the return of its popular Code Challenge competition now with a new date and live-streaming option to ensure even more schools across Wales can take part.

The event will take place on 7 July 2026 at the Richard Ley Development Centre in Swansea, where participants will be able to showcase their creativity and coding skills for a chance to win £2,000 worth of IT equipment for their schools.

Beyond the prizes, the competition also offers a valuable learning experience – helping students build problem-solving and teamworking skills, while deepening their understanding of STEM subjects and computer programming in a fun, hands-on environment.

The 2026 challenge is open to children and young people aged 7 to 16, with schools able to enter in the following age categories:

  • 7-11 age group
  • 11-16 age group

Tim Moss, DVLA Chief Executive, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome the return of the Code Challenge in 2026. The new date and live stream option will open the door for even more schools to get involved, spark creativity, and inspire the next generation of innovators.

“This competition gives young people the chance to build real-world digital skills, boost their confidence, and explore their creativity. It’s a great way to support future talent and help shape a stronger digital future for Wales.”

The event is open to schools across Wales and registration is open now. For full details and to sign up, visit: stem.dvla.gov.uk/dvla-code-challenge-2026/

The prize-giving event will be hosted by journalist and broadcaster Sian Lloyd, and the closing date for school submissions is 26 May 2026.

The competition’s success has been made possible through the support of sponsors and associates who have backed the programme over the years. The DVLA continues to welcome new sponsors to support this grassroots learning initiative
